Discussion Leader: TBA Panera Bread @ The Outlets at San Clemente 4:00-6:00 pm United States of Socialism by Dinesh D’Souza Many of us have seen Dinesh D’Souza’s fantastic docudrama Trump Card (if not, I highly recommend it). Released earlier this year, United States of Socialism is the book upon which Trump Card is based. D’Souza articulates that individuals who witnessed the global collapse of socialism in the last century are shocked at its resurrection today, and he poses the excellent question, “How can socialism work now when it has never worked before?” He explains how today’s “identity socialism” is a marriage between classic socialism and identity politics and how it trades on the resentments of race, gender, and sexual orientation. United States of Socialism has been described as “an informative, provocative, and thrilling exposé not merely of the ideas but also the tactics of the socialist Left. In making the moral case for the entrepreneurs and the free market, the author portrays President Trump as the exemplar of capitalism and also the most effective political leader in the battle against socialism.” Best of all, D’Souza’s work “shows how we can help Trump defeat the socialist menace.” |

Discussion Leader: TBA Panera Bread @ The Outlets at San Clemente 4:00-6:00 pm See Something, Say Nothing by Philip Haney (the Department of Homeland Security whistleblower who died mysteriously in 2020) A recent review describes See Something, Say Nothing in
this way: In See Something, Say Nothing, Haney – a charter member of the Department of Homeland Security with previous experience in the Middle East – and co-author Art Moore expose just how deeply the submission, denial, and deception run. Haney's insider, eyewitness account, supported by internal memos and documents, exposes a federal government capitulating to an enemy within and punishing those who reject its narrative. In this well-documented, first-person account of his unique service with DHS, Haney shows why it's imperative that Americans demand that when they see something and say something, the servants under their charge do something to prevent a cunning, relentless enemy from carrying out its stated aim to "destroy Western Civilization from within." Discussion Leader: TBA Panera Bread @ The Outlets at San Clemente 4:00-6:00 pm With All Due Respect: Defending America With Grit and Grace by Nikki R. Haley A revealing, dramatic, deeply personal book about the most significant events of our time, written by the former United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley is widely admired for her forthright manner (“With all due respect, I don’t get confused”), her sensitive approach to tragic events, and her confident representation of America’s interests as our Ambassador to the United Nations during times of crisis and consequence. In this book, Haley offers a first-hand perspective on major national and international matters, as well as a behind-the-scenes account of her tenure in the Trump administration. This book reveals a woman who can hold her own—and better—in domestic and international power politics, a diplomat who is unafraid to take a principled stand even when it is unpopular, and a leader who seeks to bring Americans together in divisive times. Wednesday, July 22, 2020 Discussion Leader: TBA Panera Bread @ The Outlets at San Clemente 4:00-6:00 pm Unfreedom of the Press by Mark R. Levin From six-time #1 New York Times bestselling author, FOX News star, and radio host Mark R. Levin comes a groundbreaking and enlightening book that shows how the great tradition of the American free press has degenerated into a standardless profession that has squandered the faith and trust of the American public, not through actions of government officials, but through its own abandonment of reportorial integrity and objective journalism. Unfreedom of the Press is not just another book about the press. Levin shows how those entrusted with news reporting today are destroying freedom of the press from within: “not government oppression or suppression,” he writes, but self-censorship, group-think, bias by omission, and passing off opinion, propaganda, pseudo-events, and outright lies as news. With the depth of historical background for which his books are renowned, Levin takes the reader on a journey through the early American patriot press, which proudly promoted the principles set forth in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, followed by the early decades of the Republic during which newspapers around the young country were open and transparent about their fierce allegiance to one political party or the other. It was only at the start of the Progressive Era and the twentieth century that the supposed “objectivity of the press” first surfaced, leaving us where we are today: with a partisan party-press overwhelmingly aligned with a political ideology but hypocritically engaged in a massive untruth as to its real nature. Discussion Leader: TBA Panera Bread @ The Outlets at San Clemente 4:00-6:00 pm CONTEMPT: A Memoir of the Clinton Investigation You could fill a library with books about the scandals of the Clinton administration, which eventually led to President Clinton's impeachment by the House of Representatives. Bill and Hillary Clinton have told their version of events, as have various journalists and participants. Whenever liberals recall those years, they usually depict independent counsel Ken Starr as an out-of-control, politically driven prosecutor. But as a New York Times columnist asked in 2017, "What if Ken Starr was right?" What if the popular media in the 1990s completely misunderstood Starr's motives, his tactics, and his ultimate goal: to ensure that no one, especially not the president of the United States, is above the law? Starr -- the man at the eye of the hurricane -- has kept his unique perspective to himself for two full decades. In this long-awaited memoir, he finally sheds light on everything he couldn't tell us during the Clinton years, even in his carefully detailed "Starr Report" of September 1998. Contempt puts you, the reader, into the shoes of Starr and his team as they tackle the many scandals of that era, from Whitewater to Vince Foster's death to Travelgate to Monica Lewinsky. Starr explains in vivid detail how all those scandals shared a common thread: the Clintons' contempt for our system of justice. This book proves that Bill and Hillary Clinton weren't victims of a so-called "vast right-wing conspiracy." They played fast and loose with the law and abused their powers and privileges. Today, from the #MeToo aftermath and Russiagate to President Trump’s impeachment trial, the office of the American presidency is in crisis—and Starr’s insights are more relevant now than ever. Discussion Leader: TBA Panera Bread @ The Outlets at San Clemente 4:00-6:00 pm Why Meadow Died: The People and Policies That Created The Parkland Shooter and Endanger America's Students by Andrew Pollack, Max Eden, Hunter Pollack (Foreword by) As featured in the New York Post and as seen on Tucker Carlson, Fox and Friends, Martha MacCallum, and more. The Parkland school shooting was the most avoidable mass murder in American history. And the policies that made it inevitable are being forced into public schools across America. “After my sister Meadow was murdered at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the media obsessed for months about the type of rifle the killer used. It was all clickbait and politics, not answers or justice. That wasn’t good enough for us. My dad is a real tough guy, but Meadow had him wrapped around her little finger. He would do anything she wanted, and she would want him to find every answer so that this never happens again. My dad teamed up with one of America’s leading education experts to launch his own investigation. We found the answers to the questions the media refused to ask. Questions about school safety that go far beyond the national gun debate. And the answers to those questions matter for parents, teachers, and schoolchildren nationwide. If one single adult in the Broward County school district had made one responsible decision about the Parkland shooter, then my sister would still be alive. But every bad decision they made makes total sense once you understand the district’s politically correct policies, which started here in Broward and have spread to thousands of schools across America.” —Hunter Pollack, “Foreword” Wednesday, November 20, 2019
Discussion Leader: TBA Panera Bread @ The Outlets at San Clemente 4:00-6:00 pm Open Borders Inc.: Who's Funding America's Destruction? by Michelle Malkin Follow the money, find the truth. That’s Michelle Malkin’s journalistic mantra, and in her stunning new book, Open Borders Inc., she puts it to work with a shocking, comprehensive exposé of who’s behind our immigration crisis. In the name of compassion—but driven by financial profit—globalist elites, Silicon Valley, and the radical Left are conspiring to undo the rule of law, subvert our homeland security, shut down free speech, and make gobs of money off the backs of illegal aliens, refugees, and low-wage guest workers. Politicians want cheap votes or cheap labor. Church leaders want pew-fillers and collection plate donors. Social justice militants, working with corporate America, want to silence free speech they deem “hateful,” while raking in tens of millions of dollars promoting mass, uncontrolled immigration both legal and illegal. Malkin names names—from Pope Francis to George Clooney, from George Soros to the Koch brothers, from Jack Dorsey to Tim Cook and Mark Zuckerberg. Enlightening as it is infuriating, Open Borders Inc. reveals the powerful forces working to erase America. Wednesday, October 16, 2019
Discussion Leader: TBA Panera Bread @ The Outlets at San Clemente 4:00-6:00 pm Trumpocalypse by Paul McGuire, Troy Anderson The End-Times President, a Battle Against the Globalist Elite, and the Countdown to Armageddon From the authors of the international bestseller The Babylon Code comes an explosive exposé of the chilling truth about the fierce opposition to the Trump presidency, and why the globalist elite and Deep State will stop at nothing-assassination, military coup, staged economic collapse, or worse-to overthrow him. “Trumpocalypse!” It’s the media-coined meme inciting panic and fear that America has elected an unstable man who will barge into delicate international affairs like a bull in a china shop and incite nations bent on America’s destruction to trigger World War III - an unprecedented nuclear apocalypse ending the world as we know it. But is the media telling us the truth? “No,” say internationally-recognized prophecy expert and Fox News and History Channel commentator Paul McGuire and Pulitzer Prize-nominated investigative journalist Troy Anderson. America’s most insidious enemies are not hostile nations; they are elite globalists-the “Establishment” that is making the “1 percent” even richer while working- and middle-class people watch their incomes and net worth’s flatline or plummet. The authors fearlessly expose the globalist elite’s secret plan for humanity and campaign of mass deception. Using documentation gleaned from years of journalistic investigation and extensive interviews with over fifty of the world’s most respected geopolitical, economic and military affairs experts, faith leaders, and biblical scholars, McGuire and Anderson unmask these elites as members of secret societies with deep occult connections who have gained control of America’s dominant institutions - government, education, entertainment, international banking, and even the media. Wednesday, May 15, 2019 Discussion Leader: TBA Panera Bread @ The Outlets at San Clemente 4:00-6:00 pm The Deep State By Craig Huey The Deep State. Politicians tell you it's a myth... The media mocks the very idea... And bureaucrats deny its existence. Here's the shocking truth: They deny the Deep State exists because they are the Deep State. But its corrupt reach and influence stretch far beyond the government... In The Deep State: 15 Surprising Dangers You Should Know, television commentator, author and small business owner Craig Huey reveals the little-known but powerful influence of this ideological stronghold over our entire nation ... our culture ... and even what our children are learning in school. You'll be horrified to learn: - How the intelligence agencies have become weaponized for political purposes - 8 government agencies where Deep State influence has escalated to a totalitarian, anti-democratic resistance movement - How members of the "bloated bureaucracy" are promoting the Deep State (and getting paid hundreds of thousands to do it) - The Deep State's #1 most powerful tool to promote their ideological agenda -- established under the Obama administration - And more... And, you'll learn how to fight back and take a stand for your freedoms and values -- before they are systematically destroyed by the Deep State. Wednesday, April 17, 2019
Discussion Leader: TBA Panera Bread @ The Outlets at San Clemente 4:00-6:00 pm American Lion By Jon Meacham The definitive biography of a larger-than-life president who defied norms, divided a nation, and changed Washington forever Andrew Jackson, his intimate circle of friends, and his tumultuous times are at the heart of this remarkable book about the man who rose from nothing to create the modern presidency. Beloved and hated, venerated and reviled, Andrew Jackson was an orphan who fought his way to the pinnacle of power, bending the nation to his will in the cause of democracy. Jackson’s election in 1828 ushered in a new and lasting era in which the people, not distant elites, were the guiding force in American politics. Democracy made its stand in the Jackson years, and he gave voice to the hopes and the fears of a restless, changing nation facing challenging times at home and threats abroad. To tell the saga of Jackson’s presidency, acclaimed author Jon Meacham goes inside the Jackson White House. Click here for more... Wednesday, March 19, 2019
Discussion Leader: TBA Panera Bread @ The Outlets at San Clemente 4:00-6:00 pm Ship Of Fools By Tucker Carlson #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The popular FOX News star of Tucker Carlson Tonight offers his signature fearless and funny political commentary on how America’s ruling class has failed everyday Americans. “You look on in horror, helpless and desperate. You have nowhere to go. You’re trapped on a ship of fools.” —From the Introduction In Ship of Fools: How a Selfish Ruling Class is Bringing America to the Brink of Revolution, Tucker Carlson tells the truth about the new American elites, a group whose power and wealth has grown beyond imagination even as the rest of the country has withered. The people who run America now barely interact with it. They fly on their own planes, ski on their own mountains, watch sporting events far from the stands in sky boxes. Discussion Leader: TBA Panera Bread @ The Outlets at San Clemente 4:00-6:00 pm The Case Against Impeaching Trump By Alan Dershowitz Alan Dershowitz has been called “one of the most prominent and consistent defenders of civil liberties in America” by Politico and “the nation’s most peripatetic civil liberties lawyer and one of its most distinguished defenders of individual rights” by Newsweek. Yet he has come under partisan fire for applying those same principles to Donald Trump during the course of his many appearances in national media outlets as an expert resource on civil and constitutional law. The Case Against Impeaching Trump seeks to reorient the debate over impeachment to the same standard that Dershowitz has continued to uphold for decades: the law of the United States of America, as established by the Constitution. Wednesday, October 17, 2018 Discussion Leader: TBA Panera Bread @ The Outlets at San Clemente 4:00-6:00 pm Happiness Is a Serious Problem: A Human Nature Repair Manual by Dennis Prager In this unique blend of self-help and moral philosophy, talk-radio host Dennis Prager asserts that we're actually obligated to be happy, because it makes us better people. Achieving that happiness won't be easy, though: to Prager, it requires a continuing process of counting your blessings and giving up any expectations that life is supposed to be wonderful. "Can we decide to be satisfied with what we have?" he asks. "A poor man who can make himself satisfied with his portion will be happier than a wealthy man who does not allow himself to be satisfied." Prager echoes other political commentators in complaining that too many people today see themselves as victims; he submits that the only way to achieve your desires is to take responsibility for your life rather than blaming others. Whether or not you agree with that view, if you're willing to put some thought into achieving a happier outlook, you will find plenty to mull over in Happiness Is a Serious Problem. Discussion Leader: TBA Panera Bread @ The Outlets at San Clemente 4:00-6:00 pm A Voice for Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens by Lydie M Denier A Voice for Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens is much more than a memoir; it is a humanizing tribute to Chris Stevens the man, by the woman who loved him. Lydie M. Denier, former fiancée and the love of Chris Stevens’ life, paints an intimate portrait of the brilliant and mercurial diplomat, teacher and Arabist that was Chris Stevens. Murdered in Benghazi on September 11, 2012, along with Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, Chris’ voice has been silenced, his personality buried beneath an avalanche of sordid headlines, political agendas and lies. In her book, Ms. Denier gives Chris a voice, finally setting the record straight about their passionate and turbulent love affair, his commitment to the people of the Middle East, and her dedicated quest to uncover the truth about what really happened the day Chris Stevens was killed and more importantly, why he was not protected. From Hollywood to Cairo, Washington D.C. to Libya, Ms. Denier shares the joy and pain of love, loss, tragedy and healing. Wednesday, May 16, 2018
Discussion Leader: TBA Panera Bread @ The Outlets at San Clemente 4:00-6:00 pm AMERICAN PRAVDA My Fight for Truth in the Era of Fake News by James O'Keefe The one real difference between the American press and the Soviet state newspaper Pravda was that the Russian people knew they were being lied to. To expose the lies our media tell us today, controversial journalist James O’Keefe created Project Veritas, an independent news organization whose reporters go where traditional journalists dare not. Their investigative work–equal parts James Bond, Mike Wallace, and Saul Alinsky—has had a consistent and powerful impact on its targets. In American Pravda, the reader is invited to go undercover with these intrepid journalists as they infiltrate political campaigns, unmask dishonest officials and expose voter fraud. A rollicking adventure story on one level, the book also serves as a treatise on modern media, arguing that establishment journalists have a vested interest in keeping the powerful comfortable and the people misinformed. The book not only contests the false narratives frequently put forth by corporate media, it documents the consequences of telling the truth in a world that does not necessarily want to hear it. O’Keefe’s enemies attack with lawsuits, smear campaigns, political prosecutions, and false charges in an effort to shut down Project Veritas. For O’Keefe, every one of these attacks is a sign of success. American Pravda puts the myths and misconceptions surrounding O’Keefe’s activities to rest and will make you rethink every word you hear and read in the so-called mainstream press. Wednesday, April 18, 2018 Discussion Leader: TBA Panera Bread @ The Outlets at San Clemente 4:00-6:00 pm Bullies: How the Left's Culture of Fear and Intimidation Silences Americans by Ben Shapiro From the editor-in-chief of The Daily Wire comes a galvanizing and alarming look at the strategy and tactics of leftist thuggery. While President Obama and the left like to pretend that they oppose bullying with all their hearts and souls, the truth is far darker: the left is the greatest purveyor of bullying in modern American history. Bullying has morphed into the left’s go-to tactic, as they attempt to quash their opponents through fear, threat of force, violence, and rhetorical intimidation on every major issue facing America today. Ben Shapiro uncovers the simple strategy used by liberals and their friends in the media: bully the living hell out of conservatives. Play the race card, the class card, the sexism card. Use any and every means at your disposal to demonize your opposition—to shut them up. Then pretend that such bullying is justified, because, after all, conservatives are the true bullies, and need to be taught a lesson for their intolerance. Hidden beneath the left’s supposed hatred of bullying lies a passionate love of its vulgar tactics. Click here to continue... Wednesday, March 21, 2018
Discussion Leader: TBA Panera Bread @ The Outlets at San Clemente 4:00-6:00 pm The American Miracle: Divine Providence in the Rise of the Republic by Michael Medved LUCKY... OR BLESSED? The history of the United States displays an uncanny pattern: At moments of crisis, when the odds against success seem overwhelming and disaster looks imminent, fate intervenes to provide deliverance and progress. Historians may categorize these incidents as happy accidents, callous crimes, or the product of brilliant leadership, but the most notable leaders of the past four hundred years have identified this good fortune as something else—a reflection of divine providence. In The American Miracle, bestselling author and radio host Michael Medved recounts some of the most significant events in America’s rise to prosperity and power, from the writing of the Constitution to the Civil War. He reveals a record of improbabilities and amazements that demonstrate what the Founders always believed: that events unfolded according to a master plan, with destiny playing an unmistakable role in lifting the nation to greatness. Among the stirring, illogical episodes described here: • A band of desperate religious refugees find themselves blown hopelessly off course, only to be deposited at the one spot on a wild continent best suited for their survival • George Washington’s beaten army, surrounded by a ruthless foe and on the verge of annihilation, manages an impossible escape due to a freakish change in the weather • A famous conqueror known for seizing territory, frustrated by a slave rebellion and a frozen harbor, impulsively hands Thomas Jefferson a tract of land that doubles the size of the United States • A weary soldier picks up three cigars left behind in an open field and notices the stogies have been wrapped in a handwritten description of the enemy’s secret battle plans—a revelation that gives Lincoln the supernatural sign he’s awaited in order to free the slaves When millions worry over the nation losing its way, Medved’s sweeping narrative, bursting with dramatic events and lively portraits of unforgettable, occasionally little-known characters, affirms America as “fortune’s favorite,” shaped by a distinctive destiny from our beginnings to the present day. Discussion Leader: TBA Panera Bread @ The Outlets at San Clemente 4:00-6:00 pm All Out War: The Plot to Destroy Trump by Edward Klein Since the moment Donald Trump launched his presidential campaign, powerful figures have been working to delegitimize the brash-talking businessman and drive him from office before he can drain the swamp and take away their power. Who are these determined and ruthless individuals who are waging all-out war against the president? Why have left-wing progressives and members of the conservative establishment joined forces to drive Trump from office? And what does this mean for the future of American democracy? Edward Klein, the former editor in chief of the New York Times Magazine, and the investigative reporter behind national bestsellers The Amateur and Blood Feud, exposes the villains behind the plot to destroy Trump. “In America,” writes Klein, “you are entitled to your own opinion, but you are not entitled to overthrow the democratically elected president of the United States and inflict irreparable damage on our country. That, however, is what Trump’s enemies on the Left and Right are doing with lies, leaks, obstruction, and violence. For those who want to join the effort to prevent these villains from crippling our democracy, All Out War: The Plot to Destroy Trump is essential reading. |

Discussion Leader: TBA Panera Bread @ The Outlets at San Clemente 4:00-6:00 pm Billionaire at the Barricades: The Populists vs. The Establishment from Reagan to Trump – by Laura Ingraham Americans didn’t just go to the polls in 2016. They joined a movement that swept the unlikeliest of candidates, Donald Trump, into the Oval Office. Can he complete his agenda? Or will his opponents in the media, protestor class, and political establishment block his efforts and choke off the movement he represents? In Billionaire at the Barricades, Laura Ingraham gives readers a front row seat to the populist revolution as she witnessed it. She reveals the origins of this movement and its connection to the Trump presidency. She unmasks the opposition, forecasts the future of the Make America Great Again agenda and offers her own prescriptions for bringing real change to the swamp of Washington. Unlike most of her media colleagues, Ingraham understood Trump’s appeal and defied those who wrote his political obituary. Now she confronts the president’s critics and responds to those who deny the importance of his America First agenda. With sharp humor and insight she traces the DNA of the populist movement: from Goldwater’s 1964 campaign, to Nixon’s Silent Majority, to Reagan’s smashing electoral victories. Populism fueled the insurgency campaigns of Buchanan and Perot, the election of George W. Bush, and the Tea Party rallies of the Obama presidency. But a political novice—a Manhattan billionaire—proved to be the movement’s most vocal champion. This is the inside story of his victory and the fitful struggle to enact his agenda. |

Discussion Leader: Barbara Runolfson Panera Bread @ The Outlets at San Clemente 4:00-6:00 pm The Big Lie: Exposing the Nazi Roots of the American Left – by Dinesh D'Souza What is “the big lie” of the Democratic Party? That conservatives—and President Donald Trump in particular—are fascists. Nazis, even. In a typical comment, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow says the Trump era is reminiscent of “what it was like when Hitler first became chancellor.” But in fact, this audacious lie is a complete inversion of the truth. Yes, there is a fascist threat in America—but that threat is from the Left and the Democratic Party. The Democratic left has an ideology virtually identical with fascism and routinely borrows tactics of intimidation and political terror from the Nazi Brownshirts. To cover up their insidious fascist agenda, Democrats loudly accuse President Trump and other Republicans of being Nazis—an obvious lie, considering the GOP has been fighting the Democrats over slavery, genocide, racism and fascism from the beginning. Now, finally, Dinesh D’Souza explodes the Left’s big lie. He expertly exonerates President Trump and his supporters, then uncovers the Democratic Left’s long, cozy relationship with Nazism: how the racist and genocidal acts of early Democrats inspired Adolf Hitler’s campaign of death; how fascist philosophers influenced the great 20th century lions of the American Left; and how today’s anti-free speech, anti-capitalist, anti-religious liberty, pro-violence Democratic Party is a frightening simulacrum of the Nazi Party. Hitler coined the term “the big lie” to describe a lie that “the great masses of the people” will fall for precisely because of how bold and monstrous the lie is. In The Big Lie, D’Souza shows that the Democratic Left’s orchestrated campaign to paint President Trump and conservatives as Nazis to cover up its own fascism is, in fact, the biggest lie of all. Wednesday, April 19, 2017 4:00-6:00 pm Panera Bread at the Outlets San Clemente Discussion Leader: Susan Campion Killing Reagan: The Violent Assault That Changed a Presidency – by Bill O’Reilly An epic account of the career of President Ronald Reagan that tells the vivid story of his rise to power -- and the forces of evil that conspired to bring him down. Just two months into his presidency, Ronald Reagan lay near death after a gunman's bullet came within inches of his heart. His recovery was nothing short of remarkable but Reagan was grievously injured, forcing him to encounter a challenge that few men ever face. Killing Reagan reaches back to the golden days of Hollywood, where Reagan found both fame and heartbreak, up through the years in the California governor's mansion, and finally to the White House, where he presided over boom years and the fall of the Iron Curtain. But it was John Hinckley Jr.'s attack on him that precipitated President Reagan's most heroic actions. In Killing Reagan, O'Reilly and Dugard take readers behind the scenes, creating an unforgettable portrait of a great man operating in violent times. Wednesday, March 15, 2017
4:00-6:00 pm Panera Bread at the Outlets San Clemente Discussion Leader: Susan Campion Three Days in January:Dwight Eisenhower's Final Mission -by Bret Baier & C.Whitney January 1961: President Eisenhower has three days to secure the nation's future before his young successor, John F. Kennedy, takes power — a final mission by the legendary leader who planned D-Day and guided America through the darkening Cold War. Baier masterfully casts the period between Eisenhower's now-prophetic farewell address on the evening of January 17, 1961, and Kennedy's inauguration on the afternoon of January 20 as the closing act of one of modern America's greatest leaders -- during which Eisenhower urgently sought to prepare both the country and the next president for the challenges ahead. On January 17, Eisenhower spoke to the nation in one of the most remarkable farewell speeches in U.S. history. Ike looked to the future, warning Americans against the dangers of elevating partisanship above national interest, excessive government budgets (particularly deficit spending), the expansion of the military-industrial complex, and the creeping political power of special interests. Seeking to ready a new generation for power, Eisenhower intensely advised the forty-three-year-old Kennedy before the inauguration. Five decades later, Baier's Three Days in January forever makes clear that Eisenhower, an often forgotten giant of U.S. history, still offers vital lessons for our own time and stands as a lasting example of political leadership at its most effective and honorable. |

4:00-6:00 pm Panera Bread at the Outlets San Clemente Discussion Leader: Rita Bennett Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis - by J. D. Vance From a former marine and Yale Law School graduate, a powerful account of growing up in a poor Rust Belt town that offers a broader, probing look at the struggles of America’s white working class. Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis—that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over forty years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck. A deeply moving memoir with its share of humor and vividly colorful figures, Hillbilly Elegy is the story of how upward mobility really feels. And it is an urgent and troubling meditation on the loss of the American dream for a large segment of this country. |
